The Honorable Dwight Evans
Pennsylvania House of Representatives
Read complete biography
- House Appropriations Chairman Dwight Evans is one of the most well respected legislators serving in the Pennsylvania General Assembly today and one of most influential. During the course of his public career, Evans has earned a reputation as a policymaker who knows how to transform ideas into action. His ethical standards, willingness to listen and pragmatic approach to government have earned him accolades from the grass roots to the White House.
Evans began his career in the House in 1980 when at the age of 26 he was elected to represent the people of the 203rd legislative district in Northwest Philadelphia. He was elected Democratic Chairman of the Appropriations Committee in 1990, a position he has held ever since.
In addition to youth and energy, Evans brought experience as a teacher, job developer, employment counselor and community leader to the state Capitol. In the early years of his career, Evans focused his energy on driving state resources to his legislative district in an effort to transform the community's blighted neighborhoods. Twenty-eight years later, Ogontz Avenue, West Oak Lane and the surrounding area is comprised of vibrant communities where education, commerce and culture thrive. Journalists have referred to the area as "Dwight Land."
On policy matters, Evans has earned a national reputation for his work to deliver quality food to underserved communities; for his commitment to education; and for his efforts to stop handgun violence, all part of which are parts of his broader strategy to spur economic development, not just in his district or in Philadelphia, but across Pennsylvania.
He is the catalyst behind the Pennsylvania's Fresh Food Financing Initiative, twice cited by Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government as one of the top public policy initiatives in the country. Through the program, public and private money is used to expand or build grocery stores in urban and rural communities. More than 50 small, mid-size, and full-scale stores have been development in Pennsylvania through the program. Evans has been invited to speak about the initiative at various conferences around the country and several states are now working to duplicate the program as is the federal government.
President Obama used the FFFI as the model for his Healthy Food Financing Initiative and First Lady Michelle Obama has cited FFFI as part of her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity. Evans has been to the White House on several occasions as a result of the FFFI program.
Evans also is widely recognized as a champion for education, whether for pre-school programs or post-graduate work. In public and at the budget table, he is fiercely passionate about funding for education. At the same time, Evans believes schools should meet stringent standards. As such, he supports choice for parents at the elementary and secondary levels and he authored the state's Charter School law in 1997.
Evans was invited by the White House to participate in a roundtable discussion with former President George Bush about education. He has spoken about education policy before the Brookings Institution and the National Press Club, among others. His education efforts today include supporting programs to recruit and retain teachers. He is on the National and Philadelphia Chapter Board of Directors of the Black Alliance for Educational Options.
Neither schools nor businesses can thrive in communities that aren't safe and secure. As such, Dwight Evans is a staunch supporter of efforts to reduce handgun violence. He is considered to be the legislature's leading voice on the issue and joined national panels at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Duquesne University to raise awareness about the impact of gun-related crime on communities.
Evans is native of Philadelphia and a 1971 graduate of Germantown High School. He graduated from the Community College of Philadelphia and LaSalle University. He received an honorary doctorate from Lincoln University. He is on the boards of the Public School Employees' Retirement System, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Pennsylvania Convention and Visitors Bureau and Concerned Black Men.
When not immersed in policy, Evans is an avid reader, a patron of the arts and sports fanatic.

Brod Bagert
New Orleans poet
Read complete biography
-
Brod Bagert is a poet from the City of New Orleans. He studied the classics in Latin and Greek, wrestled and boxed to vent adolescent angst, fell in love with and married his high-school sweetheart, practiced law, served in public office, and reared four children that are the joy of his life.
"I wrote my first poem in third grade. My mother was very sick, and I wanted to tell her I loved her for what could have been the last time. My third grade teacher, Mrs. Toups, had told us that poets write words that last forever, so I decided to put what might have been my last I-love-you to my mom in a poem. My mother recovered and saved the poem, which I had framed and hanging on the wall of my writing studio when Hurricane Katrina filled the room with seven feet of water for three weeks. The water dissolved the paper. All that was left was an empty frame. (I do, however, have a scanned image of the poem that I use in my school assemblies.)
By the time I graduated from high school I had written only a few poems of my own. That all changed in college. I wrote a lot during my undergraduate years: some self expression, some to entertain friends, some to "woo women."
I was published in a number of journals and had begun to form strong aesthetic opinions about poetry, but never considered myself "a poet." I was headed for law school, and poetry was something I simply could not take seriously.
Over the next fifteen years - law school, law practice, and politics - I wrote only a dozen or so poems, but the poetic impulse inside me shook itself out of hibernation when my children needed poems to recite in school elocution competitions. In 1980 there were almost no poems in English written in the voice of children and therefore suitable for recitation by a child. So I wrote them, in the voices of my own children, for them to recite in competition, to help them perform successfully and grow in confidence. They succeeded; I was hooked. Twelve years later I closed my law office and became full time poet."

Simone Bruni
CEO, DemoDiva
Read complete biography
-
Resilience, Re-invention and Ressurection...all dressed in PINK! This is the spirit of The Demo Diva Demolition Company. It is the energy and enthusiasm Simone Bruni brings to world of demolition.
Simone, a Lakeview resident, was a corporate meeting planner selling the city of New Orleans to high end convention planners prior to Hurricane Katrina. She led her customers through the bayous, plantations as well as the best restaurants in the Crescent City. She showcased the city with a passion and flair of southern hospitality.
Yet, life in New Orleans changed one fateful day.
The convention industry suffered massive cancelations. Simone was laid off. Her home in Lakeview was flooded. Her family members also were flooded. And as a single woman with no construction experience, rebuilding was a daunting consideration.
Simone was offered to relocate to other cities but chose to stay. "Sometimes a disaster can open some of the greatest opportunities in one's life. The Katrina disaster opened that door for me and I walked straight through it," says Simone. "I couldn't see it at first. I knew that I had to put one foot in front of the other day by day and rebuild my little house. I was so overwhelmed with grief. As I began to see that my neighbors' needs were greater than mine...that's when I caught the vision. The Demo Diva was born. This was my new niche. And I thank God every day for such rewarding, wonderful work."
"The first question people ask me is 'What does event planning and demolition have in common?' The answer is people."
Simone was quick to recognize that although the equipment is different, you are only as good as your team whether organizing parties or construction work. Simone scrambled to find qualified subcontractors in demolition. She brought a pink flamboyance to her marketing and then hit the streets of Lakeview door to door. Her first big breakthrough came the night she heard that Little League baseball would be holding their first game back in the neighborhood. With business cards printed at Office Depot, Simone went throughout the parking lot putting cards on windshields. "It was humbling and I must admit that I did cry. I remember seeing friends with their husbands and children playing ball and I'm putting cards on windshields! Oh God! I think I felt so alone and vulnerable at that moment. This is not how life was suppose to turn out."
Simone recalls clinging to the words spoken to her by the Brazilian immigrants helping her rebuild her house. "You are an American! You have every opportunity to own your own business and make a life for yourself. Go for it!".
Currently, Simone plans to grow The Demo Diva. She has pink tools in the works, along with lots of other fun apparel. Keep checking back for more to come!

This requirement was one of the many measures instituted after Hurricane Andrew, and was done so at the urging of the Building Code Evaluation Task Force, of which Prof. Mitrani was a member. Starting in 1999 Prof. Mitrani, at one time or another, has served as a structural plans examiner for five building departments in Miami-Dade County. His involvement in the structural plans review process has allowed him to directly experience how many of the building code, product approval, and other construction delivery system improvement measures he helped develop have impacted construction and the resulting benefit to the housing and building stock in South Florida.
Professor Mitrani has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Among them, he was awarded the "Engineer of the Year" Award by the Miami Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society twice: in 1994 and in 2003. He was also awarded the "Outstanding Service to the Profession" Award by the Miami Chapter of the FES in 1997. He was President of the Miami Chapter of the FES during 1998-1999.

Kathryn Pavlovsky
Principal, Deloitte
Read complete biography
- Title: Principal, Financial Advisory Services, and co-leader of the Enterprise Sustainability Services group.
What she does: I work with clients to identify environmental liabilities and risks in their organizations.
Deloitte office: Deloitte United States, Houston, Texas
Years with Deloitte: 8, Became a Deloitte U.S. principal in: 2007
Grew up in: The world. I grew up as a military dependent and lived overseas, up and down the eastern seaboard of the United States.
How did you first become interested in environmental issues? I spent many of my formative years in Europe, and when I returned to the United States, I was keenly aware of the differences between the United States and Europe regarding sustainability. I later pursued a degree in environmental economics, learning about environmental, social, and economic trade-offs, and the value of natural resources.
How did you turn enterprise sustainability into a formal service for clients in the United States? I started my career valuing environmental liabilities and supporting Deloitte U.S. audit clients with environmental disclosures and liabilities. I realized that the organization's four business functions and industry focus create a unique opportunity to address clients' growing sustainability challenges, from strategy to operational integration to governance needs. So I submitted the idea for a cross-functional service offering related to sustainability through "Innovation Quest," an internal Deloitte U.S. contest aimed at gathering innovative ideas on how to better serve clients.
